Celebrating Queer Characters in My Books-Devin Tossier

Since it’s Pride, I thought I’d write about a queer character in my books for every day in June. I’m super behind but that’s in character for me haha

An aesthetic that contains images
Aesthetic for Devin

Devin, who is the best, is a bisexual with a heart of gold who, for a long time, chases after sex and flings to ignore all the death around him. He is Kingsley’s oldest and best friend and his queerplatonic partner although what that means to either of them is unclear. Outside of Kingsley, Devin is a social activist, sensitive poet, and reluctant rebel leader. He is in charge of the KLA’s propaganda department and, along with Kerry, a fellow rebel leader, and Aimee, Dev’s eventual wife, organizes many of their social programs.

His theme song:

So come fill up your glasses
Of brandy and wine
Whatever it costs I will pay
So be easy and free
When you’re drinking with me
I’m a man you don’t meet every day

I’m A Man You Don’t Meet Every Day

Devin truly believes that love will defeat hate and prefers to rebel through community building and fostering social ties over violence. He often clashes with Kingsley, who only understands violence, and that puts a strain on their relationship long before spoiler things. There is also the suggestion that the other KLA members could never truly rely on him because they thought he was too soft. Devin often gets drunk off his ass and acts as the class clown to hide his own inner turmoil

Devin wasn’t born in Heva or the Killbraugha. Instead, he’s from the island of Ferdern, a country that has a a complicated history with the crocodile people. He’s the fourth son out of six children, so Devin reasons no one is really going to miss him if he dies. Devin never thinks things through and his move to Heva was a spontaneous decision that he took without consulting anyone. When he arrived in the capital, he had no money, no place to live, and knew no one there, but he had a charming smile, a winning personality, and a quick wit. He quickly became a crocodile Casanova, jumping from partner to partner to survive. Sometimes his partners knew about each other, other times they don’t…

Devin also tried to sell his poetry but no one was interested and he couldn’t hold any manual jobs. He had no interest in being a rebel, only surviving, and probably would have faded into obscurity if he hadn’t helped Gary during a nasty bar fight. Gary introduced Devin to the KLA and he stayed because for the first time he felt that maybe, just maybe, he could have a purpose.

Important Relationships

While Devin is a bit of a flirt and is always seeing a handful of people one way or another, the people who mean the most to him are Kingsley, his sort of queerplatonic partner, Aimee, his eventual wife, and Kerry, a fellow rebel leader who despises Kingsley and was there for Devin when Kingsley wasn’t

Kingsley

Kingsley (he/him): Kingsley and Devin met when they were at different places in understanding their own sexualities and desires. Devin wasn’t in a place to make a commitment of any sort (although that didn’t stop him from fantasizing about someday being good enough to ask Aimee to marry him) and Kingsley wasn’t sure about any of his own feelings and needs. They formed a quasi-queerplatonic relationship, but it was full of misunderstandings, mixed signals, and missed opportunities. Then spoiler things happened, Kingsley grew possessive, and Devin increasingly felt that he had to choose between Kingsley and everyone else.

Aimee

Aimee (she/her) is a straight, cisgender crocodile who is a minor character in the wip. She goes from being the bartender that Devin has a ridiculous crush on but she finds immature to an unspoken challenger and threat to Kingsley in ways that don’t make sense to anyone but Kingsley. Aimee originally had a crush on Kingsley, but that fell apart before it began and then spoiler things happened and Aimee and Devin only had each other. They’re learning that sometimes that in itself is enough.

Kerry

Kerry (he/they) is an aro-ace agender, fellow rebel leader who is first and foremost a professional. He hates unwarranted risks and despises martyrs. He absolutely loathes Kingsley and tolerates Devin because at least Devin means well. They actually get along with Aimee best. Because Kerry hates Kingsley and Kingsley feels confused about Kerry, Devin is often caught between the two. As spoiler things happen, Devin is pushed closer to one than the other and that has huge implications for the book itself and the series as a whole
